If your child is choosing science courses for next year, you have probably found a ranked list of the hardest AP classes somewhere online. Most of those lists are built from pass rates, and pass rates are one of the most misleading numbers in the whole AP system.
Here is the 2026 data for the AP sciences, and then what it actually means.

Two things in that table surprise almost every parent.
The first is that AP Chemistry has the highest pass rate of any AP science. Chemistry has a reputation as the brutal one, and yet 76 percent of students scored a 3 or higher, more than in Biology or Environmental Science.
The second is that AP Physics C, which is calculus-based and unambiguously the most advanced physics the College Board offers, has a higher pass rate than AP Physics 1, which is the introductory algebra-based course. Mechanics came in at 72 percent and Electricity and Magnetism at 75 percent, against 68 percent for Physics 1.
That should tell you immediately that pass rates are not measuring difficulty.
Pass rates measure who takes the exam
AP Physics C is taken by roughly 70,000 students. AP Physics 1 is taken by roughly 184,000. The Physics C group is overwhelmingly seniors who have already completed or are taking calculus, who have usually already survived a prior physics course, and who chose to go further. That population would post strong numbers on almost any exam.
AP Physics 1 is the opposite. It is frequently a student’s first physics course, often taken in sophomore or junior year, sometimes alongside the algebra skills the course depends on rather than after them. The exam is not harder than Physics C. The students sitting it are earlier in their development.
The same logic explains AP Chemistry. It is taken by about 185,000 students, and it usually sits behind a prerequisite year of regular chemistry. Students arrive having already been filtered. Compare that with AP Environmental Science, which has a reputation as an easier science and yet posted a 69 percent pass rate with 16 percent of students scoring a 1. It is often taken as a first or standalone AP by students exploring the format, and the scores reflect that mix.
So when you read that a class is one of the hardest APs, ask who is in the room. That question matters more for your decision than the headline percentage. The number that actually matters: the share of 1s
Look again at the final columns. AP Physics 1 produced 19 percent 5s and 17 percent 1s in the same year.
That is a bimodal distribution, and it is the most useful signal in the whole table. It means AP Physics 1 is not a course where most students land somewhere in the middle. Students tend to either get it or fall off a cliff, and very little of the class ends up in between.
Compare that with AP Chemistry, where only 6 percent scored a 1, or Biology at 8 percent. Those are courses where a struggling student usually still walks away with a 2 or a 3. In Physics 1, a struggling student is far more likely to end up with a 1.
For a parent, that changes the risk calculation. It is not that Physics 1 is impossible. It is that the gap between prepared and underprepared is unusually wide, and the course punishes falling behind more aggressively than the other sciences do. That is precisely the situation where catching a problem early matters most.
Why physics breaks students who are fine in other sciences
There is a specific reason this happens, and it is worth understanding before your student enrolls.
Biology rewards a student who can absorb and organize a large volume of material. Chemistry sits in the middle, mixing conceptual understanding with calculation. Physics is different in kind: there is comparatively little to memorize, and almost everything depends on applying a small number of principles to situations the student has never seen.
This catches out strong students who have succeeded through diligence. A student who has always been rewarded for careful notes and thorough review can work extremely hard in physics and see very little movement, because the skill being tested is not recall. It is translating a described situation into a model, then reasoning through it.
The College Board’s own 2026 commentary makes the same point from the other side. On the hardest AP Physics 1 free-response question, students had to predict an outcome qualitatively, derive it symbolically, and then check whether the two agreed. Students scoring a 2 typically earned a single point on that question. Knowing the formulas was not the obstacle.
One more thing worth knowing about AP Physics 1
If you have an older child who took AP Physics 1 a few years ago, your impression of the course is probably out of date.
The exam was restructured for 2025, and the College Board also ran an evidence-based standard setting that reset where the score boundaries fall. The effect was substantial. In 2024, the pass rate was around 46 percent. In 2026 it was 68 percent. The course content did not suddenly get easier; the standard was recalibrated against what college faculty actually expect.
This matters practically. Prep materials written for the older format will train the wrong exam, and older advice about the course being a near-guaranteed low score no longer reflects the data.
How to decide which AP science fits your student
- Check the math prerequisite honestly. Physics 1 leans on algebra, and Physics C requires calculus. A student who is shaky in the underlying math will struggle in the physics regardless of effort.
- Consider what kind of learner they are. Strong memorizers often do better in Biology. Strong problem solvers often prefer Physics even when their grades do not yet show it.
- Ask about the teacher and the school’s track record in that specific course. Within-school variation is often larger than between-subject variation.
- Look at what the course is for. If it is a prerequisite for an intended major, the fit question is different from a student adding a science to strengthen a transcript.
- Do not treat a lower pass rate as a reason to avoid a course. Treat it as a reason to plan support in advance.
Where tutoring changes the outcome
AP sciences are unusually responsive to one-to-one support, and physics most of all, because the failure mode is so specific.
When a student gets a physics problem wrong, the score tells you nothing about why. They may have misread the situation, chosen the wrong principle, set up the model correctly and then made an algebra error, or understood everything and run out of time. Those are four different problems with four different fixes, and a practice test cannot distinguish between them. Someone watching the student work can, usually within a session or two.
The pacing matters too. Physics compounds harder than any other science, because later units assume fluency with earlier ones rather than just familiarity. A student who is shaky on forces in October does not simply stay shaky; they lose access to most of the spring curriculum. Intervening in the fall is a completely different exercise from intervening in April.

Is AP Physics 1 the hardest AP science?
It has the lowest pass rate of the AP sciences and the highest share of 1s, but that reflects who takes it as much as the exam itself. Physics C is more advanced material and posts better numbers, because it is taken by a more prepared group. Physics 1 is best described as the least forgiving of the AP sciences rather than the most difficult.
Is AP Chemistry hard?
It has a demanding reputation, and the content is genuinely dense, but in 2026 it had the highest pass rate of any AP science at 76 percent with only 6 percent scoring a 1. The prerequisite year of chemistry most schools require does a lot of work here. Students who arrive with solid math and a prior chemistry course tend to do well.
Which AP science should my student take first?
For most students, Biology or Chemistry, depending on whether they lean toward absorbing material or solving problems. Physics 1 is a reasonable first AP science for a student who is strong in algebra and enjoys problem solving, and a risky one for a student who is not.
Does a low AP score hurt college applications?
AP scores are usually self-reported and generally carry less weight than the course grade and the rigor of the transcript. When should we get help if the class is going badly?
Earlier than feels necessary, particularly in physics. Because the units build on each other, a gap in the fall widens through the spring.
