Richmond Autism and Special Needs Tutors

In recent years, medical studies have been reporting an increase in the number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD / ADHD, and Dyslexia. Why this increase is occurring is a highly controversial issue but what is agreed upon, by both medical and educational professionals, is that these children need special attention to prevent them from falling behind academically.

Special Needs: Our Philosophy and Support System

At Tutor Doctor Richmond, we believe that ALL children deserve the opportunity to reach their full learning potential, which is why we are such strong proponents of one-to-one in-home and online tutoring. We are proud of the fact that by offering individualized instruction, we are able to help children with special needs to successfully meet their academic challenges.

By treating our students like the unique individual they are, we are able to develop tailored tutoring programs in Richmond which are effective in addressing each student’s unique set of issues. Our process begins with a detailed assessment of each child’s needs, in order to match him or her with the ideal tutor with respect to the child’s learning style, personality, and the academic subject matter for which he or she needs help. We also take into account all available information from parents, teachers, doctors, and psycho-educational assessments to develop a tailored program to help each student realize their academic potential. We would like to remind parents, however, that our tutoring programs are not a source of therapy for learning disabilities. The tutors we work with provide support throughout the learning process, help students develop study and organizational skills and strategies that will utilize their strengths.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

According to Autism Speaks Canada, Autism has become the fastest growing and most commonly diagnosed neurological disorder in Canada. In fact, in the last decade, the prevalence of ASD has increased by over 100%. Unfortunately, current statistics also indicate that the unemployment rate for adults with ASD is over 80%. However, experts believe that with early intervention and the proper support, all individuals with ASD can thrive.

Autism Funding Provided By Our Provincial Government

Since special needs intervention services can be quite costly, the Ministry of Children and Family Development in British Columbia, offers families with children aged 6-18 up to $6,000 per year per child to help pay for eligible out-of-school autism intervention services. Tutor Doctor Richmond has worked hard to develop in-home and online tutoring programs which have qualified us as a Registered Service Provider and as such, we are able to invoice the government directly for the families we serve.

Why Our Special Needs Programs in Richmond Are Effective

During the free in-home and online consultation, we match students with an appropriately qualified and skilled tutor from the Richmond area. We believe that it is extremely important that the tutor, who becomes more of a “mentor” for his or her students, must be able to relate easily to them in order to be effective. Therefore, before pairing a tutor with a student, we take into account the student’s academic needs, any psycho-educational professional diagnosis, geography, personality, learning style, the family’s schedule, and goals established at the consultation.

To help our special needs students develop their study and organizational skills, the tutors we work with implement executive skills or“X-Skills” game plan for academic success. This game plan effectively provides Study and Organizational Skills and Executive Function (EF) support. Since most autistic students struggle with EF, this system is significant because it not only helps in compensating but also in actually increasing the student’s skills in this area.

Finally, our private tutors focus on students’ ongoing school work and follow the curriculum set by the British Columbia Ministry of Education. However, the tutors we work with also provide a supplemental curriculum when necessary.
