Can you share a memorable success story or a breakthrough moment with a student?

As a Tutor, I have met with several students over the years through Tutor Doctor. One memorable story that comes to mind is how I helped break down abstract cell biology concepts into tangible, concrete images for a Grade 12 Biology student earlier this year by using diagrams and connecting ideas!

What do you enjoy most about tutoring?

The fact that every student is different and brings to the session their unique combination of lived experience, learning, and skills. It is great to be able to walk them through various concepts and see them grow throughout the process.

What do you think is the key to being successful as a tutor?

Patience and communication both during and outside the sessions. These elements help build a rapport that creates a safe space where learning can occur.

Radhika B.

Radhika B.

Tutor

Radhika holds a BSc (Honours) and has a passion for English, Math, and Science. She believes that learning doesn’t have to be boring — whether breaking down tricky concepts or finding creative ways to tackle problems, she works to help things “click” for her students.

Outside of tutoring, Radhika enjoys reading a good book, planning her next travel adventure, doing Pilates, and chasing her dog around the house. She loves helping students build confidence and actually enjoy the process of learning, because once it starts making sense, it becomes kind of addictive!

Can you share a memorable success story or a breakthrough moment with a student?

One of my favorite tutoring moments was with a student who seriously hated writing — like, getting a full sentence out was a battle. Over time, we worked on building ideas, confidence, and making writing feel less like a chore and more like self-expression. The real breakthrough came when their teacher told the parents how much progress they’d made — full sentences, clearer thoughts, and even a little spark of creativity! Seeing that sense of pride on my student’s face? Easily one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

What do you enjoy most about tutoring?

What I enjoy most about tutoring is connecting with my students and being part of their journey, not just academically, but in their growth as individuals. There’s something really special about watching a student gain confidence in themselves, little by little. Whether it’s an “aha!” moment after a tricky math problem or finally writing a paragraph they’re proud of, I love knowing I played a small role in helping them get there. Additionally, every student brings their own unique spark, and getting to know them makes each session both meaningful and enjoyable.

What do you think is the key to being successful as a tutor?

I think the key to being a successful tutor is meeting students where they’re at — academically and emotionally. It’s not just about knowing the subject, but knowing how to explain it in a way that actually makes sense to them. Patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor go a long way! Building trust and creating a space where students feel safe to ask questions (and make mistakes!) is what truly sets a great tutor apart. At the end of the day, it’s about helping them feel seen, supported, and capable.

Can you share a memorable success story or a breakthrough moment with a student?

I had a student who didn’t enjoy math and struggled with her multiplication tables. We employed a variety of strategies to learn them, maintaining consistency in learning and implementing the strategies every week. We moved on to other areas of math. Still, multiplication came up again, and in the span of time where we hadn’t been working on them, I could tell a noticeable difference in her ability to retain the facts. Her division improved because of it, and it made me proud to see how far she had come to where she was incredibly confident with her math.

What do you enjoy most about tutoring?

Any time a student is able to say “Ooooh, I get it!” and then follow through by actually applying the knowledge that they learned is always amazing! Knowing that you have worked so hard with one student, and something clicks, is incredibly rewarding

What do you think is the key to being successful as a tutor?

Getting to know the kids! Taking time to learn about their passions, their hobbies, their interests, and then adapting their learning toward something they can connect to. If they love Minecraft, base math lessons around Minecraft. If they love competition, card games or speed games make all the difference. Getting to know them and adapting your lesson to their needs makes for a truly successful tutor/student relationship.

Can you share a memorable success story or a breakthrough moment with a student?

After a tutoring session on skimming for a Grade 5 student in English, we engaged in a reflection about the skimming exercises, where I asked them how they found the experience and the benefit of skimming as a skill. It was fulfilling to see the student recognize the importance of this skill and inspired confidence within me that this student will go on to be a skilled reader.

What do you enjoy most about tutoring?

I obtain great fulfillment from being able to provide a safe and engaging learning space that fosters curiosity and conversation to enhance a student’s understanding of material outside of the classroom. Whether it’s a student’s bright eyes from understanding a concept or explaining their answer to a question with excitement and passion, it is always amazing to see when students expand their understanding in real time and find enjoyment in the learning experience.

What do you think is the key to being successful as a tutor?

I believe that being fully in-tune with your students is the key to being a successful tutor. It is one thing to teach and help students learn the material, but being committed to having an ongoing awareness of who your student is as a person (how they study, their interests, their dreams) will help ensure a fulfilling learning experience that is tailored to them and conducive to their academic success.
