What is the ACT®?
The ACT shows colleges and universities what the student has learned throughout high school. The results provide colleges and universities with information for recruiting, advising, placement, and retention. In some cases, a student who is not considering going to college may reconsider their options after seeing their ACT test results. Additionally, the ACT has a component that offers career exploration, which helps students identify their career options.
Sections of the ACT
The ACT test is made up of 4 multiple choice tests on English, math, reading, and science, and an optional written test.
- English – 45 minutes, 75 questions
- Math – 60 minutes, 60 questions
- Reading – 35 minutes, 40 questions
- Science – 35 minutes, 40 questions
- Optional: Writing – 40 minutes, 1 question
Including breaks, students have 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete the multiple-choice tests. If you decide to do the written portion, then the test will be a little over 4 hours (including breaks).
What is the SAT®?
The SAT measures if a student is ready for college and also provides colleges with common data used to compare all of their applicants.
Sections of the SAT
- Reading – 65 minutes, 52 questions
- Writing and Language – 34 minutes, 44 questions
- Math – 50 minutes, 58 questions
- Optional: Essay – 50 minutes, 1 question
Including breaks, the SAT takes 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete. Including the optional essay takes 4 hours and 5 minutes (including breaks).
