Tutor working one-to-one with an exceptional learner

At Tutor Doctor Chandler-Gilbert-Ahwatukee, we call students with special needs exceptional learners — and we build their tutoring around how they learn best, one-to-one, in a setting where they’re comfortable.

Every exceptional learner deserves individualized instruction from someone who understands their needs. Our hand-selected local tutors support students with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, processing disorders, and other learning differences — filling knowledge gaps, building executive-function and self-advocacy skills, and restoring the confidence that struggling in a conventional classroom can chip away.

We serve East Valley families in their homes or online, and we align our tutoring with the IEP, 504, or classroom support programs already in place. You know your child best, and you’ll always have a say in the plan we build together. Many of the families we work with also teach at home — see our homeschool tutoring page.

Tutor Doctor supports exceptional learners, including those with:

ADHD and attention challenges
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Auditory and visual processing disorders
Language-based and non-verbal learning differences
Executive-function challenges (organization, focus, time management)
IEP or 504 accommodation plans

Use your Arizona ESA funds for special needs tutoring

Arizona’s ESA program is an excellent fit for exceptional learners. Since the 2022 universal expansion, all Arizona K–12 students are eligible — and students with a documented disability (IEP, MET, or 504 plan) may qualify for funding above the standard amount. Tutoring is an approved ESA expense.

We’ve been a registered ClassWallet vendor for over five years, so paying for tutoring is direct and simple — with no out-of-pocket surprises.

Kimberly Selchan

Kim understands the balancing act firsthand — she’s a working mom of two, including a high schooler who learns with accommodations.

After nearly 20 years leading and developing teams, she built Tutor Doctor Chandler-Gilbert-Ahwatukee to bring families the right one-to-one match, not a one-size-fits-all program. Her team’s goal is to help each student build momentum, and gain confidence and independence that last well beyond any single subject.

A clear path, built around your child

Four simple steps from your first free consultation to steady, measurable progress.

Assess

A free consultation plus assessments aligned to Arizona standards, and an optional MindPrint cognitive assessment to understand how your child learns and where executive-function support will help most.

Match

We pair your student with a local tutor experienced with their specific needs — not just any available tutor.

Tutor

One-to-one sessions in your home or online, aligned with your child’s IEP, 504, or classroom program.

Support

Progress updates after sessions and regular check-ins to keep the plan on track. And because a student’s success takes a community, we’re glad to recommend trusted local providers — occupational and physical therapists, assessment centers, and other specialists — when your child could benefit from more than tutoring alone.

Families working with IEPs and 504s have an advocate in their corner

When you reach out, the first person you’ll talk to is Christine, our Client Care Manager and a Certified Level One Non-Attorney Special Education Advocate (NASEAT). That means the person building your tutor match actually understands special education systems — and can help your family feel less alone navigating them. It’s support most tutoring companies simply don’t offer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Arizona ESA or ClassWallet funds for special needs tutoring?

Yes. Tutoring is an approved ESA expense, and we’re a registered ClassWallet vendor, so you can pay directly through your account. Students with a documented disability may also qualify for funding above the standard amount. Because eligibility and funding are set by the Arizona Department of Education and can change, confirm current details at azed.gov/esa — we’re glad to help you understand how tutoring fits.

Do your tutors have experience with ADHD and autism?

Yes. We match each exceptional learner with a tutor experienced with their specific needs, and we align our approach with any IEP, 504, or classroom support already in place.

Will tutoring align with my child’s IEP or 504 plan?

Yes. We treat your child’s existing plan as the framework and build our support around it. Christine, our Client Care Manager, is a Certified Non-Attorney Special Education Advocate and can help your family navigate the process.

Which areas do you serve?

In-home tutoring across Gilbert, Chandler, Ahwatukee, Tempe, and nearby Phoenix East Valley communities including Higley and Mesa — plus online nearly anywhere.

Do you work with foster families?

Yes. We’re a Preferred Partner of the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and can accept their education grants; foster youth also qualify for ESA.

How do you match my child with a tutor?

We hand-match based on your child’s diagnosis and learning profile, availability, location, and personality fit — often after an assessment and an optional MindPrint cognitive assessment — and align with any IEP or 504 already in place.
