Summer Reading Challenge

undefined

This summer Tutor Doctor Westlake, Chick-fil-A Strongsville and Chick-fil-A Rocky River have partnered together to host a Summer Reading Program for area students aged 3 through 12th grade.

During the summer months, many students lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year, which is also known as the summer slide. It is said that children who don’t read over the summer can fall an average of two months behind and by the time they are in 5th grade they could be 2.5 years behind in their reading. However, kids who do read over their summer break can improve their vocabulary, their reading comprehension skills and can perform 35% to 40% better on their achievement tests when they return to school in the fall.

Our Summer Reading program will include a Reading Challenge, Story Time and a Book Drive.

Reading Challenge

  • The Summer Reading Challenge will run from June 11th to August 6th and is open to all students age 3 through 12th grade. You can register for the challenge any time but only the minutes you log during the actual challenge dates will count.
  • We are challenging each student to read at least 20 minutes a day during the challenge. You can log more or less minutes if you wish. Click Here for our Reading Log that you can use to log all the minutes you read. At the end of the challenge you will submit this log to be eligible for prizes
  • You must register to be included in the reading challenge. Only students who register will be eligible for prizes. If you have more than one student who wants to participate, you will need to register each student separately.
  • We will be running two Reading Challenges. One at Chick-fil-A Strongsville and at Chick-fil-A Rocky River. You can participate in both, but need to register for each one separately.
  • You will be required to submit your completed reading logs by August 8th by using one of these methods. (You only have to use one way to submit your reading log)
  • Dropping off your completed reading log to Chick-fil-A Strongsville or Chick-fil-A Rocky River by close of business on August 8th. A designated box will be available at each location.
  • Submitting a photo of the reading log or filling out the form with your hours Here

Book Drive

We have teamed up the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank to collect new and gently used books during our Sumundefinedmer Reading Program. The Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank’s mission is to foster improved literacy and a love of reading by providing free books to children in need. They have collected and distributed over one million books to over 95,000 kids in Cuyahoga County. This is a great opportunity to clean out your bookshelves of books your kids no longer need. You can drop these books off at Chick-fil-A Strongsville and Chick-fil-A Rocky River. Each location will have a yellow bin to place your books in.

What type of books do they need:

The Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank is in need of new or gently used books. This could include board books, picture books, books featuring diversity and books for beginning readers. They will accept books for all age levels. Please do not provide books for adults, magazines, textbooks, encyclopedia sets or coloring books.
