“My two elementary-aged sons have been receiving virtual tutoring from a Halifax-based Tutor Doctor tutor four times a week for the past six weeks. It has been a lifesaver for our family as my partner and I cope with COVID and the extra work demands it has placed on us. The online public school options were completely inadequate in terms of keeping our kids involved and learning. My request for consultation was responded to within hours and Shelley Brown quickly set up a time to meet with me to conduct a thorough assessment of what I was looking for and my children’s strengths and areas for development. She immediately had a tutor in mind for my kids and within days had options set up for me to choose from.
The tutor herself has proven exceptional. My children are being schooled in two languages (one is in French immersion) and she is able to meet the needs of both, in two back-to-back sessions (which makes scheduling easy for us). I had suggested my eldest would benefit from learning about diversity issues and social advocacy and she has developed – in a short-time – multiple lessons on topics such as Indigenous and Black Canadian history, the history of Braille, women’s rights, and environmental issues, just to name a few. She has simultaneously challenged him in Math and helped him develop his reading and writing. He is an energetic and easily distracted kid and she rapidly implemented a reward system and challenges to keep him focused. As for my youngest, who is the total opposite, shy and reticent, she has him enjoying French and finally taking some risks in speaking it. Perhaps most importantly, she has made the lessons fun for both children so that they look forward to them. And they absolutely adore her. Her daily reports are comprehensive and give me a very good idea of what is being covered, what they are good at, and areas for further work. This has been an excellent experience and I would strongly recommend it.”
