As scary and difficult it is for parents to watch their children grow up and go from middle school to high school, it can be as, if not more, daunting for your teen. There are so many things that may concern them as they move forward and you want to make sure they are prepared to make the transition without having to worry too much.
Keep in mind, this transition can be overwhelming for your child as they move to a new school, learn the campus, meet new friends, and get used to their teachers. These are big changes in their lives, but you have the resources to help your child transition.
- Visit the school before hand – You can help your child prepare by taking a visit to the school before the next semester begins. This way, they can get an idea of the layout of campus and potentially meet a few of the staff. They’ll know how to find their classes or lockers when needed.
- Stay involved – As a parent, you have the power to stay involved in what is happening with your child at school. Ask how his or her day was and help them with any issues that they may be having. They may have questions about social aspects, or simply need help with some of the work they received.
- Encourage your child to be social – You don’t want to put your child in an awkward position, but encourage them to take the time at lunch or any other breaks to talk to some of the other kids in the class. Once they begin to make friends, everything else will become easier moving forward.
- Keep them positive – This is a difficult time and it may show in your child’s emotions. Keep positive and remind them that everything is going to be okay. Have them focus on their schoolwork and assure them that other things will come with time, so don’t stress out.
If your child is having a difficult time adjusting to the work they receive, there are options to help them with that as well.
