Sylvana’s Story

I attended bilingual school to learn English and Spanish during my foundational academic years, this dual system enriched my current perspectives allowing me to compare and question what is possible in education. I am passionate about understanding a student’s individual needs as I myself went through private tutoring to help me build the necessary competencies to succeed in school.

Years later, when studying for my MBA in England, I again needed to navigate a new education system. The complexity of my education experiences has shown me that learning is a continuous life experience. Recently, moving to the US, I successfully attained industry-recognized certifications as a Human Resources professional and I am confident that the foundations built from my earlier academic years were instrumental in allowing me to adaptively overcome such a diverse array of environments.

After working for fifteen years in Human Resources, I acknowledged the relevance of education in leading to opportunities and achieving professional goals. I discovered that my passion lies in supporting and enhancing students learning experiences in their education journey, which never ends.

James’s Story

Being dyslexic, I deeply value the benefits of 1-on-1 tutoring on the developing mind. Growing up I remember that ever since students were old enough to have their report cards ranked, I was at the bottom. During those five years at the bottom my poor mom tried many after school classes before finding the right fit. It took time but the initial pay-off of tutoring was that my grades slowly improved, and funnily enough, my first high school job was at Kumon as a math tutor!

Although I had stopped receiving tutoring at college the benefits of strong academics, organization skills, and confidence continued. I was the class vice-president graduating with honors in the field of neuroscience and many years later was the class president and top of my MBA class. Today, I am both thriving in a Fortune 500 company and supporting Sylvana, my wife, with Tutor Doctor in San Francisco.

Reflecting on my journey it is evident that I was greatly influenced through 1-on-1 tutoring. Therefore, I am excited to come full circle and work with Tutor Doctor to guide and equip students to reach their full potential.
