Tutor of the Year 2019
Amaya Cox
One thing that makes Amaya such an amazing tutor is her willingness to
dig in to understand the work our son, Lincoln, needs help with. As an
example, for his Latin class she took the time to learn the area he was
struggling with and then was able to improve his understanding. She brings
in outside resources, helps him find additional materials online, and
makes sure he understands the concepts necessary to succeed.
While the foregoing is consistent with what you might expect from a tutor, what makes Amaya special to us is that she is inspiring Lincoln to learn other subjects. She taught him a few concepts in Chemistry during one of their sessions (a class he isn't even taking) and ignited a curiosity and passion for learning usually reserved for video games.
As a parent, it is a significant day when your 12 year old son comes to you to describe in detail a Chemistry concept he's learned simply because of the sheer joy it gives him to study it. Amaya encourages and believes in Lincoln and inspires him to take on new challenges. Her session reports show her enthusiasm and the response we see in his school work and in our conversations with him is invaluable. We are grateful for her thoughtful and caring approach to tutoring Lincoln.
Hayden Galloway
My 9th grade son was struggling in multiple classes. C’s, D’s,
and an F in all but science and PE. My wife and I decided to enroll him
with Tutor Doctor. We were so lucky to find Hayden, the way he relates
to and talks to my son actually gets him to open up, smile and learn.
Hayden started with a barrage of math, then started hitting all subjects
including Spanish. The proof is in the pudding as they say, my son was
able to get B’s on all of the mid-terms Hayden helped him study for.
Glory-Gee Aquino
Glory-Gee is wonderful. She has helped my two children tremendously. She
is always engaging, positive and encouraging. She never makes them feel
like they aren’t working hard enough. She empowers them to do the
best they can. They are learning from Glory-Gee more than they could ever
learn from me in their particular tutoring subjects. We look forward to
continuing the tutor sessions with Glory-Gee and I am excited to see our
children excel with her tutorship!!
Clarissa Romez
My son, who is in 7th grade, has struggled with math since he was in 1st grade. He instantly struggled with the basics and fell immediately behind. His self-confidence dropped and his passion for school dwindled. I tried everything I could as a parent to help him, but he was too far behind. Finally, he told me he felt like he was drowning and would never be able to keep up with his class. This is when I reached out to Tutor Doctor. We were matched with Clarissa a year ago and their first meeting was an instant connection. Clarissa nurtured him and started with the basic math facts. She pulled every trick out of her bag to help Kadin understand. Her energy encouraged him to work harder and their friendship grew. Quickly Kadin's confidence was returning. Not only does she have a relationship with my son, but she is now part of the family, helping us all. One year later, Kadin has an A in Math and is back to loving school. I honestly do not know where we would be without having met Clarissa.
When we enrolled in Tutor Doctor my daughter had a 33% grade in Math in February of 2019. She was really struggling and as a parent, I felt like I had failed her. As the weeks went by I saw my daughter's self-confidence increase and well as her understanding of the math concepts. When we first started tutoring, Samantha was down on herself and would beg me not to make her go to tutoring. Within a few weeks, I would hear Samantha during her tutoring sessions say things like, " I actually knew how to do the homework Clarissa, and look at my test, I only missed 5". During our weekly sessions, Clarissa would ask her how she felt when she got an answer right in class. Often ask her questions about her other classes and how she was doing in those. She cares about Samantha and her success. By the end of that school year less than 4 months in tutoring, Samantha ended the year with 99% in Math. Samantha was thrilled, not only had she passed Math, she knew with hard work she could do anything. Over the course of the 6 months, we met with Clarissa, Clarissa helped Samantha tremendously, not just academically, but her self-confidence soared.
