The History & Structure of the SAT® exam
The SAT® exam is the oldest method for testing college readiness in North America. Every college in the US and Canada accepts it as a metric for a student’s aptitude for learning and critical reasoning, which is why applicants depend on the SAT® score to set them apart.
The SAT® exam is divided into four tests: Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language, Math-No Calculator, and Math-Calculator. The SAT® also includes an optional Analysis Essay and is now Rights Only scoring; there is no longer any penalty for guessing on any section.
The SAT® was originally designed to measure intelligence and reasoning ability on an objective level and has since become a key measure for college admissions officers.
Today, the SAT® is composed of two scored sections and a bonus essay:
Math (Calculator: 38 Questions; No Calculator: 20 Questions)
Reading & Writing (Reading Test: 52 Questions; Writing Test: 44 Questions)
Each section has a possible score of 800, with a total possible score of 1600. The optional essay offers 12 extra potential points.

What Your Student Will Need to Know
Math: The SAT® Math tests focus on four specific content areas: Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Topics in Math. Each area emphasizes the foundations of mathematical analysis: problem solving, pattern and structure recognition, and modeling.
Reading: The five reading passages are authentic texts from previously published sources and include literary fiction, history, social science, and natural science. Graphs, charts, tables and other pictographic information are included in two of the passages.
Writing and Language: The Writing test includes four passages with questions that ask students to correct errors in grammar and usage and to revise passages for development of ideas, sentence and paragraph organization, and effective language use. The Writing test also includes graphs, tables and other pictographic information.
Optional Essay: Students will also be presented with an optional essay that asks students to read and analyze an argument and discuss the author’s ability to persuade through use of rhetorical skills and evidence. Students receive three scores on their essays: one for reading and understanding the passage, one for their analysis of the author’s argument, and one for their ability to craft an effective and insightful essay.
