Have You Read Ramona Quimby or Henry Huggins books?
Have you read the Ramona Quimby or Henry Huggins books? The author of these
series, Beverly Cleary, turns 100 on April 12th!
She wrote her first book (Henry Huggins) in 1950 at the urging of a boy at her school. She was a school librarian, and a little boy marched up to her and asked “where are the books about kids like us?”
She wrote the Henry Huggins books and many others as an antidote to the sentimental and sugary children’s stories that were popular in the 1950’s. Ms. Cleary wanted to write about real children and their adventures.
Her first Ramona book came out in 1955, and was called Beezus and Ramona. In all, she sold over 90 million copies of her books.
She now lives a quiet life in California, reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Maybe you should pick up those series to read over the summer!
