Meet the Team
Margaret Kinney -Owner
Margaret Anaya-Kinney is a certified teacher who worked in the Colorado Springs public school system for over 13 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing, a master’s degree in human resources, a master’s degree in curriculum & instruction, and a principal’s license. Margaret is also a certified dyslexia screener and is very committed to helping students who struggle in reading.
As the owner of Tutor Doctor, Margaret is able to fulfill her love of helping students achieve their fullest potential. Her own child has taken advantage of Tutor Doctor’s services, so she knows firsthand how valuable one-on-one tutoring is from a personal perspective.
Margaret brings her professional experience in education to Tutor Doctor. She knows the Colorado education system well. She knows what teachers expect in the classroom, and what students must do to achieve success in the classroom.
In addition to managing her own Tutor Doctor business Margaret continues to work and volunteer in the schools. Her passion and love for the Tutor Doctor Brand is a direct result of her experiences in watching struggling students become successful students with the help of Tutor Doctor tutors.
Deborah received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education/ Deaf Education from The University of Northern Colorado, a master’s degree in Special Education from UCCS, and received her Principal Preparation Program Certification from The University of Denver. She has 30 years of teaching and administrative experience. Deborah is fluent in American Sign Language and was a coach for Special Olympics for eight years. In her free time, she enjoys biking, camping, photography, reading, and most recently quilting.
At the age of 16, Sonja started working in a hospital as a nurse’s aide. She worked in the children’s wards which started her on a life-long career with children. She went back to school shortly after marrying her husband and earned a BA in Distributed Studies: English, Sociology, and Psychology, at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS). She also earned a master’s degree in Special Education from UCCS. She received her Professional Principal License from the University of Phoenix. She has worked as a special education teacher for approximately 20 yrs. She worked in three countries teaching both regular education and kids with special needs. Her passion for teaching has brought her out of retirement and into tutoring. She enjoys cooking, working out at a local gym, swimming and traveling. She has three children and three grandchildren who she enjoys spending time with. They are all grown now, but she cherishes the time spent taking them to ball practice, swim lessons, music practice, etc.
Gene recently finished his second Master’s Degree from George Washington
University in Bilingual Special Education. His first Master’s Degree
is from McDaniel College in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis
in TESOL. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education
from the University of Findlay in Ohio. Currently, he holds Colorado and
Maryland certifications in the areas of Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse Education (K-12) and Elementary K-6. He also holds a Special Education
Generalist certification (5-21).
He spent 6 years in the mainstream classroom both in Ohio and Maryland. He has experience in both inner city and suburban settings teaching grades 3 through 6. Beyond that, he has taught at the College level. At NOVA (Northern Virginia Community College), he taught an intense, 5 credit ESL writing class and taught adult ESOL at PGCCC (Prince George’s County Community College). He recently served as the Language Acquisition Department Head at Wuxi-Taihu International School in Wuxi, China. Prior to moving to China, he served as an ESL Assessment Teacher for Baltimore City Public Schools. With 15 years of experience in Education, he has the necessary skills, experience and talent to be able to assist your child's learning needs.
Jessie has a bachelor of science in Mathematics with a minor in Mechanical Engineering from UCCS. She is an experienced tutor working in all levels of Mathematics, as well as other subjects including language arts, science, and test prep. She loves showing students how to organize their time productively, how to plan days and schedules, and how to define and reach their goals! She is a huge proponent of planning and achieving, and with practice and effort, anything can be done. She has experience working with ADD and ODD children, and feels comfortable assisting them with learning topics as well as organizational and focus challenges. In her free time she enjoys crocheting and doing yoga; she believes that a calm mind is a focused mind. She enjoys reading and cooking. She also enjoys spending time with her family; she has 3 children, a 9 year old son, and 2 daughters aged 6 and 1.
Juliette is a native of Colorado. She has a bachelor’s degree in Applied Communication with a minor in Philosophy. She has a diverse background including construction/building, law, judicial, business, banking, and writing/editing. Within this experience, she has a solid administrative foundation and is extremely organized, communicative, and a natural leader. She is also ESL (English as a Second Language) Certified (CO School of English), and has 4 years of experience tutoring. She has tutored people with success in a wide variety of ages, backgrounds, cultures, and English levels, and this includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In her free time she enjoys hiking/walking, animals, music, art, reading, learning, cooking, and travel!
Lee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from The University of Minnesota and a Master’s of Education in mathematics from Jones International University. He retired from the Navy as a captain having served for 28 years directing the operation & administration of 14 naval reserve centers spread across the southeast United States. He is a certified math teacher and worked in the public school system for five years. He has tutored for Tutor Doctor for 4 years tutoring all levels of math and many other subjects including chemistry, physics, statistics, and language arts.
Jessica earned a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Illinois in 2009. She taught second grade for many years in Chicago. She is currently teaching Head Start and Colorado Preschool Program. She moved to Colorado in 2012 because she and her family love the mountains. She spends most of her free time camping, fishing, and hiking. She also loves reading and making crafts.
Teri has a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development from California State University. She taught in the public and private school systems for 10 years, and has home-schooled from 2005 to the present. She has tutored for five years and has experience using a variety of methods to help students learn including visual, kinesthetic, and auditory modalities. In her free time she enjoys scrapbooking, reading biographies, and gardening.
Marcus is currently an undergraduate student at UCCS majoring in Anthropology, with minors in German and Japanese. He is also the President of Nippon Club (Japan Club), the Japanese Anime Club, and a member of German Club. Languages are his passion, and that is why he has decided to become a tutor; besides working for Tutor Doctor he also tutors German and Japanese at UCCS. His approach to tutoring is to first and foremost have patience. He believes that a student should take as long as they need to master material and that it is not a problem if they have to go over the same material again and again until they understand it. Everyone learns at a different pace. In his free time he enjoys reading, writing, video games, board games, learning Japanese and German, and spending time with family and friends.
