ACT or SAT, Which One Is Best for You?

As you approach the end of your high school career and are ready to take the step to apply for colleges, you have to make plenty of decisions that could determine your future. One of the decisions you will have to make is what test to take, the ACT or SAT. Before, the decision regarding which test was best for you would have been determined by the location of the school to which you intended to apply. Midwest universities factored ACT scores in heavily while schools on the east and west coast focused more on the SAT.

Now, most of the colleges throughout the nation put the same amount of considerations on the ACT as the SAT. As a student applying to colleges, how do you determine which is the best one for you to take? There are some things you have to consider before moving forward.

  • Your overall knowledge and critical thinking skills: The ACT is based more on your pure knowledge while the SAT mostly analyzes your reasoning ability. While both tests do have similar sections, the SAT is likely to include creative applications such as story problems while the ACT has a more straight forward approach.
  • Your skills in science: The ACT includes a section on science, something that the SAT stays away from entirely. If you are strong in science, the ACT may be the route you want to go, but if it wasn’t your strongest subject, the SAT may be the best option.
  • Your research: Make sure you look into both tests and pick the right one for you. At the end of the day, you want to pick the test that you feel you would excel in most. The test is about showing colleges your education and knowing which test you want to take can help you study to maximize your score.
