While college and graduate school admissions tests theoretically provide a snapshot of a student’s academic achievement, earning high scores requires students to not only demonstrate their skills and knowledge but also their understanding of the exam they are taking. Tests are the most stressful events in a student’s educational career. They often determine the grade for an entire class, and subsequently affect the student’s placement in other classes. In addition, tests like the SAT® or ACT determine which colleges a student will be accepted into, and tests like the MCAT or GRE can decide a person’s future career prospects!

PSAT:

The Preliminary SAT®/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) which measures math, reading and writing skills students need for college.
In October 2015, the new, redesigned PSAT exam was launched. Typically students take a trial PSAT in Sophomore year and the official PSAT in the Fall of Junior year. There are a few High Schools that offer the PSAT in Sophomore year and the PSAT in the Fall of Junior year parents must register independently and pay for. Check with your High School and be aware of the procedures and registration dates. Call us for guidance, advice and PSAT test prep.

SAT® and ACT Exams:

Most four-year undergraduate institutions require applicants take either the SAT® or the ACT to assess their readiness for college. These tests are used as a tool to judge the likelihood the student will succeed in the programs offered at the school. We start with the goal of minimizing anxiety and keeping entrance exams in perspective. Through diagnostics, individualized plans, a robust skill-building curriculum, focused practice, and continuous positive reinforcement, Tutor Doctor has helped thousands of students improve their scores and apply to schools with confidence.

SAT® Exam:

Students have a choice of seven different dates each year to take this standardized college admissions test. The SAT® has four parts that include Reading, Writing & Language, Math with a Calculator, and Math without a Calculator, although scoring is based on two parts: Evidenced Based Reading and Writing and Math. Scores for each section of this college admissions exam range from 200 to 800, which means the total test score, which is the sum of the scores from the Math and English sections, ranges from 400 to 1600.

ACT Exam:

Undergraduate programs use applicants’ ACT scores not only to make admission decisions but also to determine students’ course placement and to advise them about different career paths. This standardized college admissions exam is offered six times each year.

The ACT reports include the overall composite score, which is the average of the section scores, as well as the National Ranks for each section, subsection, and composite scores. In addition, the reports provide information to help students and parents interpret the meaning of the test taker’s ACT score profile. Of course, the tutors we work with assist their students and use the ACT score report to identify strengths as well as challenges to address in order to improve their performance if the person plans to retake the test.
